Common Causes of Roof Leaks in New York Homes
Most roof leaks trace back to the same handful of culprits. Knowing them helps you catch problems early.
1. Failed flashing
Flashing is the metal that seals the joints where your roof meets chimneys, walls, valleys, and skylights. It’s the single most common source of leaks — when it lifts, rusts, or pulls away, water gets in.
2. Damaged or missing shingles
Northeast wind lifts and tears shingles; sun and age crack them. Once the surface is broken, water reaches the underlayment and deck.
3. Worn skylight and vent seals
Any penetration through the roof — skylights, vents, pipes — is a potential leak point as its seal ages.
4. Clogged gutters
When gutters clog, water backs up under the roof edge and into the fascia — especially during heavy rain and winter ice.
5. Ponding water on flat roofs
On flat roofs, water that doesn’t drain eventually works its way into seams and around drains.
6. An aging roof
Sometimes the cause is simply age — a roof that has reached the end of its service life and is leaking in multiple places at once.
