Storm Damage Roof Inspection Checklist

After a big storm, a quick ground-level check can catch damage before it becomes a leak. Here’s what to look for — safely.

Stay on the ground — never climb a roof after a storm. Use binoculars and walk the perimeter of your home.

From the ground, look for:

• Missing, lifted, or creased shingles
• Shingles or shingle pieces in the yard
• Dented or knocked-off granules (hail bruising)
• Bent, torn, or missing flashing at chimneys and walls
• Damaged or detached gutters and downspouts
• Fallen branches resting on the roof
• Granules washed into gutters and at downspout outlets

Inside the house, check for:

• New water stains on ceilings or walls
• Damp spots or drips in the attic
• Daylight visible through the roof boards

When to call a roofer
